Argo Navis.
Argonav takes its name from Argo Navis, the ship of Jason and the Argonauts, once the largest constellation in the sky. In 1763 the astronomer Lacaille divided it into Carina, the keel; Puppis, the stern; and Vela, the sails. Pyxis, the mariner’s compass, marks where the mast once stood.
The parts were separated, but their stars kept one shared set of designations; Canopus, the brightest, remains Alpha Carinae to this day. It is the helmsman’s star that ships still navigate by. Divided into stations, united by one system.
